Job Description

2023 Intern – Hydrogen-Grid - Research and Analysis

Key responsibilities:

One of the main challenges ahead is to establish a smooth transition from energy generated by fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy without compromising power stability. To guarantee this, there will be a need to store excess energy, for example from solar power, from days with high sunshine duration for use when solar irradiation alone is insufficient to power the load.

The project for this internship is focused on modelling an existing standalone microgrid system including hydrogen generation and storage using Simulink.

An hydrogen electrolyzer is an electrochemical device that consumes electrical power to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen electrolyzers are used for hydrogen production and are considered as part of a green energy production–storage distribution system when combined with a renewable power source, a hydrogen tank, and fuel cell systems.

As part of this internship, experimental data shall be collected from existing components from our MASERA microgrid testbed, including a PV plan, genset, bank load, PEM fuel cell, a Li-ion battery and an AEM electrolyzer.

The data will be used to design a simulation (digital twin) of the microgrid and identify the optimal operating conditions for the different components.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in any engineering, mathematics, computer science, or other related discipline
  • Strong in physics/electrical power engineering/ mathematics and experience in programming (e.g. Matlab, Simulinnk, Java, Python) and data management
  • Familiarity with software architecture, Web development, communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, OCPP) and cloud platforms (e.g., Google Cloud)
  • Prior knowledge in smart contracts and blockchain would be a plus
  • Interest or experience in conducting research and draw insights and recommendations from the analysis
  • Experience or interest in topics such as electric mobility, renewable energy market and business model analysis
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Eligible to work in Singapore and able to commit up to 6 months
