About EDF Lab Singapore
EDF, a world’s leading electricity company, is aiming at speeding up innovation for the cities of tomorrow with innovations in energy efficiency in buildings, new low carbon uses of energy, smart grids, renewable energy, electric mobility and batteries.
In Singapore, the R&D branch of EDF Group has launched EDF Lab Singapore in 2014 to develop and explore solutions to help decision makers and developers achieve their vision of smart and sustainable cities. Working with the Singaporean institutions, EDF Lab Singapore is rooting a strong expertise adapted to the Singaporean and South East Asian context. EDF Lab Singapore is therefore looking for new talents to join its motivated team.
Key responsibilities
The Smartgrid IT Research Intern will be involved in the Grid Activities of EDF Lab Singapore, focusing mainly on microgrids. EDF Lab Singapore is currently working on design tools to size microgrids for rural electrification.
As such the future recruit scope of work will be involved in the evolution of two tools:
- Load Curve Generator
- This Excel-based tool is used to estimate the consumption of remote communities in Indonesia and build the loadcurve that is an essential input in sizing the overall microgrid system
- The intern will work on adapting the current Indonesia-specific tool and database to a more generic approach.
- The expected contribution is to develop an admin interface to populate the relevant inputs (reference electrical consumption pattern, individual load per equipment…) in the existing tool
- PREMO
- PREMO is a cloud-based tool developed in JavaScript by EDF experts located in France.
- This tool is an in-house advanced microgrid design tool equipped with an optimizer that sizes the generation assets (Solar PV, Lithium-ion battery and diesel generator) to best fit the loadcurve overall the lifetime of a microgrid.
- EDF will include in 2021 new functionalities such as biomass power plant assets and a non-linear growth rate applied to the initial load-curve
- The expected contribution is to stress test those new functions with real-life projects developed by EDF in Indonesia to calibrate and validate the updated version of PREMO.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree in electrical engineering
- Experience in programming skills: Excel/VBA mainly, JavaScript and MATLAB appreciated as well.
- Independent and self-motivated, yet able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in an international environment.
- Enthusiastic about contributing to the integration of Renewable Energy and Rural Electrification
Skills developed throughout the Internship
Throughout this internship, the recruit will be trained on the technical topics of microgrids that are embedding the full picture of designing and operating a complex electrical system. This will increase its knowledge about real-life constraints of industrial assets from an electrotechnical standpoint.
Its software skills in VBA, JavaScript and Matlab will be enhanced thanks to the guidance of EDF experts
