Motorist was founded in 2015, after our founder Damian Sia tried selling his car on his own. As a first-time seller, he encountered many unethical buyers and dealers who tried to take advantage of his inexperience.
He was also daunted by the paperwork involved. As a busy entrepreneur, he simply didn't have the time for all these inefficiencies and procedures. That was when he figured a hands-off approach would be the best solution. Thus, Motorist was born.
To date, Motorist is one of the fastest-growing automotive startups in Singapore. The company has successfully assisted over 443,000 customers and completed $572,000,000 in vehicle transactions securely and successfully.
The company’s current mission is to help drivers make smarter decisions by simplifying vehicle ownership in Singapore. The company plans to achieve this through the Motorist App, a smart vehicle management platform. Through the Motorist App, users can receive notifications and reminders for road tax, traffic offences, vehicle inspections, COE expiry, vehicle recalls and more.
Users can even transact their car through the app, receive audio alerts for speed and red-light cameras, view their latest vehicle details from LTA, and get 24-hour valet and roadside assistance. The Motorist App was successfully launched on March 2019 and reached 100,000 app users in February 2021.
In January 2019, the company successfully raised its first round of seed funding from JobsCentral’s co-founders Der Shing Lim and Shao-Ning Huang, and Zopim’s co-founder Royston Tay. The funds will be used to expand the company’s operations in Thailand this year. Motorist currently has offices in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand.
