Sustaining Employability of Low-income women & Families (SELF) is a ground-up initiative with the aim to reduce inequalities faced by low-income Singaporean women by bridging opportunities for them to sustain their employability and achieve progressive income growth. Two core themes we believe in are empowerment through community building and knowledge sharing. To this end, we are creating an accessible online platform (mobile app) for them to tap on available resources to sustain their employability. Our goal is to expand the available options for these women so that they have the knowledge to make better decisions in life.
Background
Through interviews with different organisations, we realised that despite the government’s efforts to promote skill-improvement platforms, many of these resources are rarely used by low-income women. The economic status of low-income Singaporean women and their families are also worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. So we asked: how can we encourage low-income local women to tap on these resources to sustain their employability?
With the help of passionate designers and app developers, we came up with the idea of developing a mobile app to compile resources from various organisations onto a single platform. We also wanted to make the search for resources more intuitive and streamlined so we created an interactive quiz that assesses the user’s current strengths and needs. We hope that our app can help low-income women and their families expand their options, sustain their career and ready them to take charge of their lives!
