The Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) develops high-value manufacturing technology and human capital to enhance the competitiveness of Singapore’s manufacturing industry. It collaborates with various multinational and local companies in the fields of precision engineering, MedTech, aerospace, automotive, marine, oil & gas, electronics, semiconductors, logistics, and other sectors.
SIMTech is a research institute of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
About the Role: Folding a flat sheet of paper into a functional surface or structure has been an intriguing design problem. When working with engineering materials, we consider material thickness during the folding process to achieve specific engineering needs, such as deployable space antennas, solar panels, and origami robots.
With advancements in additive manufacturing—particularly 4D printing, which utilises actuating shape-memory polymeric/metallic materials that respond to external stimuli—the origami and kirigami-inspired designs can be printed and actuated to their functional state afterwards.
We are seeking a motivated and innovative intern to contribute to the cutting-edge research and development in 4D printing of origami-inspired deployable structures. This role focuses on combining advanced additive manufacturing techniques and mechanism-based design principles to create self-transforming structures that can change shape in response to external stimuli.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on state-of-the-art developments in 4D printing and origami-inspired deployable structures with guidance.
- Assist in designing, modelling, and simulating deployable structures.
- Perform prototyping, testing, and analysis of 4D-printed models to evaluate performance.
- Document results and findings in technical reports or research papers.
Requirements:
- Educational Background: Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or related disciplines.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
- Knowledge of programming and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
- Familiarity with 3D printing technologies and materials; experience with 4D printing is a plus.
We provide:
- An active and vibrant research environment
- Hands-on experience at the forefront of 4D printing and deployable systems research.
- Work closely with a team of experts in design and manufacturing processes.
- Opportunities to co-author research papers or patents based on project outcomes.
- Development of skills that are highly valued in industries such as aerospace, space, and robotics.
Application Process:Interested candidates are invited to submit the following:
- A CV highlighting relevant academic and project experience.
- A cover letter explaining your interest in this role and how your skills align with the responsibilities.
