SMEVentures is seeking an intern for a 3-month research project examining the feasibility of a niche private equity model in Asia Pacific.
SMEVentures is a pioneer of an entrepreneurial buyout model called a search fund, which every year backs several entrepreneurs (a.k.a. searchers), each of whom will search for, acquire, and operate a small business as owner and CEO. We are partners to the searchers from beginning to end and take an equity stake in each acquired business.
The search fund model was born at Harvard and Stanford in 1984 and has flourished in the US, generating over US$6.9 billion for investors and over US$1.8 billion for entrepreneurs. However, search funds have only recently landed in Asia Pacific, and in August SMEVentures completed Australia’s first-ever acquisition via a search fund with entrepreneur Rob Gaunt, who is now owner and CEO of ACE Training in Victoria. We’ve recently partnered with two more searchers in Australia and aim to launch several more in Australia and New Zealand this year.
Prior to building SMEVentures, Managing Director Jake Nicholson was a searcher himself and then employee #1 at Search Fund Accelerator, the world’s first accelerator for search funds that is still the market leader in the US.
