The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a non-governmental, registered animal welfare charity with IPC status. We rely mainly on donations from our supporters to continue our important role as animal protectors.

Approximately $4,000,000 annually is required to run all our services including 24/7 emergency rescues, cruelty & welfare investigations, Singapore’s only community animal clinic, an adoption programme, education outreach, reuniting lost pets with owners, sterilisations for community animals, and a shelter for over 200 unwanted, abused or abandoned animals every month.

Job Description

Overview:

The Advocacy Intern will assist the SPCA in shaping and promoting policies and positions on key animal welfare issues. This internship will offer an opportunity to contribute to the mission of enhancing the welfare of animals in Singapore. The intern will gain practical experience in policy research, advocacy strategies, and stakeholder engagement.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Policy Research and Analysis:
  • Conduct in-depth research on local and international animal welfare policies, legislation, and best practices.
  • Analyse current animal welfare issues and trends, and provide recommendations on SPCA's stance and strategic approach.
  • Prepare reports and policy briefs on various animal welfare topics.

 

  1. Advocacy Support:
  • Assist in developing and drafting position statements, advocacy materials, and public awareness campaigns.
  • Support the coordination and planning of advocacy initiatives and events, including public forums, workshops, and community outreach activities.
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders to promote SPCA's advocacy efforts.

 

  1. Data Collection and Management:
  • Gather and organise data related to animal welfare and cruelty cases, and other relevant metrics.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating databases related to advocacy work and animal welfare issues.

 

  1. Communications and Outreach:
  • Contribute to the creation of content for SPCA's website, social media platforms, newsletters, and other communication channels.
  • Help prepare communications materials to raise awareness about animal welfare issues.

 

  1. Administrative Support:
  • Provide administrative assistance to the advocacy team, including scheduling meetings, preparing materials, and organising files.

 

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed studies in a related field, such as Animal Science, Environmental Studies, Law, Legal Studies, Public Policy, Sociology, Veterinary Sciences or Communications.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Passion for animal welfare and a commitment to the mission of the SPCA.

 

Commitment Period

  • Paid internship
  • August to December 2024 (timelines flexible)
