The Straits Times Schools team is a dynamic one that believes in enriching the lives of young people through news and current affairs, and getting them to become civic-minded and engaged citizens of tomorrow. It works to engage young readers aged seven to 25 in news and contemporary issues using online stories, print, videos, newsletters, exhibitions, events, and more. The intern would contribute to the work of the team in areas such as: Gathering news and telling stories or explaining information in a way that young audiences will understand and be drawn to; developing content for social media, websites and/or print that will engage young audiences; crafting news-related or education-related content through text and visuals (graphics, videos, photos).
JD:
The intern will attend diary events, such as press conferences, briefings etc, learn how to draw information from newsmakers, and report on the ground. The intern will also participate in story brainstorming, and be involved in all aspects of the reporting and editing processes, to see his story from start to finish. -Mini in-house tutorials: The Schools team regularly huddles together to conduct basic training and refresher sessions for the team, such as basic interviewing, developing follow-up questions, fact-checking, selecting photos and captioning.
Requirements:
A strong command of the English language; an interest in current affairs, social issues, and trends; comfortable with interacting with a range of people and organisations; a positive attitude to learning
Learning outcome:
Research, work on and write your own exclusive stories for features; learn to create materials (could be text, audio, video and so on) specific to young audiences; develop a sharper news sense; collaborate with other team members on working on content and execution of small engagement projects, as the calendar permits.
Working hours: Mon to Fri 9.30 am to 6.30 pm. As an intern journalist, you may be required to work on some weekends. Your supervisor will discuss with you in advance, should you be required to work out of office hours. Time off/ Off-in-lieu will be given if you are working beyond office hours.
