Job Description

The Straits Times interactive graphics team is looking for a creative digital illustrator/3d specialist intern to join our DIgital Graphics team and spatial analysis team in the newsroom. You would be working alongside journalists, developers, designers, and editors to create original digital content for our readers. If you have a passion for illustration, storytelling, journalism, and the craft of designing digital experiences, please apply to join our dynamic team. Some of the tasks you would be involved in:

Create stunning 2D/3D models and illustrations for various projects. Develop detailed 2D/ 3D models of objects, products, or environments using industry-standard software (e.g., Blender, Maya, 3ds Max).
Use cutting-edge software and tools to bring creative visions to life, ensuring high-quality and innovative designs.
Apply texture mapping, lighting, and rendering techniques to produce realistic and visually captivating 3D assets
Assist in designing and prototyping data visualisations, visual stories, social media assets using various tools and technologies
Utilise spatial analysis techniques to uncover and visualise geographical trends, patterns, and insights relevant to news stories.
Collect, clean, and analyse geospatial data from various sources, including government agencies, research organisations, and public datasets.
Contribute to brainstorming sessions and offer creative solutions for data visualisation, data storytelling and visual design and functionality

Strong preference for students in their last year of graphic design, illustrations, animation, fine arts, architecture, computer science, data science, statistics, journalism studies. Proficiency in industry-standard 3D modelling and rendering software. Excellent creative and artistic abilities. Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), spatial analysis tools, and data visualisation platforms are a plus. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail. Experience with virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) design. Familiarity with 2D illustration and graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite). 

After successfully completing their internship, interns will have gained invaluable hands-on experience and a comprehensive skills set. They will be proficient in crafting compelling visual narratives through a mix of skills in visual storytelling, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, data visualisation, mapping, graphics design, animation, social media graphics, web development, including immersive experiences, and 3D illustrations. Interns will have had the opportunity to collaborate on real-world projects, contributing to The Straits Times' digital presence and engaging our readers with interactive and informative content. They will have honed their abilities to transform complex data into clear and engaging visuals, enhancing ST's storytelling capabilities. This internship experience will not only enrich their portfolios but also prepare them for dynamic and multifaceted careers in journalism, design, web development, and illustration, where they can play a vital role in shaping the future of visual storytelling
